With a few exceptions, supermarkets and convenience stores were identified using the filing classification provided by the business in approved permit applications.
Staff at the Allegheny County Health Department spot-checked this dataset and removed some establishments that did not correspond to the overall definition. For example, food establishments with a separate permit but operating within a larger supermarket were removed, as were movie theater concession stands.
